On 10 July 2025, the Khoi San E Foundation (KSEF) brought its Mandela Day spirit to life through a heartfelt tree planting initiative in Ceres, Western Cape. Among the three community sites that participated, Deon Adams Crèche stood out as a place where the smallest hands helped sow the biggest hopes.

A Day of Planting, Learning, and Joy

At Deon Adams Crèche, the energy was infectious. Little ones—some barely tall enough to see over the planting holes—joined caregivers, educators, and community volunteers in placing young pecan and almond trees into the soil. These nut trees, chosen for their resilience and long-term value, represent more than just future shade and food—they symbolize a growing connection between children and the land they call home.

With compost donated by KSEF and planting holes prepared in advance, the process was smooth and joyful. The crèche’s staff, led by Principal Pat Manuel, played a vital role in organizing the day and ensuring that every child had a chance to participate. Their enthusiasm and care turned the event into a celebration of community, learning, and environmental stewardship.

Cupcakes, T-Shirts, and Tiny Tree Guardians

To mark the occasion, KSEF handed out branded t-shirts to participants—though next time, smaller sizes will definitely be on the packing list. Cupcakes were shared as a sweet treat, adding a festive touch to the day. For many of the children, this was their first experience with planting, and their excitement was palpable. These young tree guardians may not fully grasp the impact of their actions yet, but they’ve already begun a journey of environmental awareness and community pride.

    Planting Seeds of Change

Erica Adams-Berger, founder of KSEF, spoke to attendees about the Foundation’s mission: slow, sustainable growth rooted in cultural respect and practical collaboration. Her message resonated deeply at Deon Adams Crèche, where the act of planting trees became a powerful metaphor for nurturing young minds and futures.

The Mandela Day Tree Planting Project is part of KSEF’s broader commitment to uplifting underserved communities through hands-on education and environmental action. At Deon Adams Crèche, that commitment took root—literally and figuratively.

    Gratitude and Looking Forward

KSEF extends heartfelt thanks to Principal Pat Manuel and the entire crèche team for their dedication and warmth. Their partnership helped transform a simple planting day into a meaningful experience for all involved.

As the trees grow, so too will the sense of connection and care that was planted alongside them. And as KSEF continues its journey, Deon Adams Crèche will remain a shining example of how small actions can lead to lasting impact.
